The South Downs
Michael George

In 1992. Pavilion published The South Downs. It was part of a very attractive series of books about all things British and came with a really nice forward by Denis Healey but wasn’t particularly well printed. The South Downs by Michael George has just been published, this time with a short but astonishingly understanding forward by David Dimbleby who seems to have understood instantly what Michael was on about. This edition has been self published by Monterey Press and is well printed. It’s not the same book. Leafing through both, it isn’t easy to find the same picture although clearly, much of it comes from the same original shoot; it’s just a different frame. It is lovely stuff. Michael George so obviously adores Sussex and everything that make it Sussex.

Collections have a selection on line from the wealth of analogue material we hold from Michael George. We can scan anything for anyone but clearly we need to sift through the files and make available much more of this lovingly recorded material. Sussex is so timeless. Cliffs may collapse and piers burn down but the Sussex Downs and the countryside remain the same and are beautiful.
